To Centralize or Decentralize? That is the question... (Part 2)

A few weeks ago i asked the question to centralize or decentralize? From my perspective, the argument for centralizing purchasing operations has to revert back to the original intentions of strategic sourcing and how much an organization wants to control the procurement activity within a company. If we assume that an organization is looking to drive cost savings and manage their spend, the next steps are largely based on the organization cultural drivers for how ‘spend under management’ can be achieved.

Advisory: The Career Element that is Always in Style

Do you work closely with outside advisors to develop your strategy, plan and, yes, even to coach you? In the last several weeks I have polled Vice-Presidents across a multitude of disciplines for their thoughts and practices. Overwhelmingly, those that have catapulted their careers forward utilize experts in their lives to further their careers. The term “expert” has many calling cards: advisor, mentor, sounding board, coach, guide and career counselor were the ones that came up most often during my polling.

Failure to Communicate = Misalignment

Business strategies are developed all the time but often fail during implementation because the strategies are not shared with those that need to execute them. George Palmatier said it well: Failure to Deploy is often a Failure to Communicate. Communication failure leads to misalignment. If you don’t communicate the expectations, how do you expect others to execute when they don’t know the expectations?

Eid Mubarak from!

On this holy day, an expected number of three plus million Muslims will travel to the valley of Arafat to complete the main corner of their Hajj pilgrimage. The first day of Eid Al Adha, the 10th Dhul Al Hijjah of the Islamic calendar, will correspond to Tuesday 15th October 2013, whereby all Muslims around the world will celebrate this holy event with prayers, sacrifices and family gatherings.

At we sincerely wish each and every one of our readers a happy Eid and and wish them all success and prosperity in this coming year Insha’Allah.

The Real World Sourcing Series - Contract Management & Effective Supplier Relationship Management

The Real World Sourcing series returned last week after the summer break and it returned with a bang! The briefing was hosted by industry expert Peter Smith and covered two topics widely discussed in the industry at present, Contract Management - Generating Real Value from your Contracts and Effective Supplier Relationship Management.

As noted by Peter in the initial planning stages of the session, a recent study of 200 procurement professionals (over the commercial and government sectors) selected contract and supplier management as one of their top three biggest opportunity areas across the procurement organization, massively outnumbering the other factors listed below .
